Jump Boxes are handy portable battery boxes that you can carry with you either in the trunk or a storage area in your vehicle. You use them to start your vehicle when the battery is dead. Hopefully this only happened because a light was left on accidentally and therefore the battery was drained.

The best thing about Jump Boxes are that you can start your car yourself without waiting for someone to come help, either a friend or roadside service or having to ask a stranger for help. This is also great for you if you live in a rural area and need to commute to work or school.

Jumper Boxes come with cables so you don’t have to worry about those. The cables are connected just as you would regular jumper cables. Follow the directions that come with your Jump Box and remember to hook up the positive cable to the positive post first and then the negative cable to the negative post last. Then start your vehicle. When your battery charges then disconnect the negative cable first and the positive cable last.

Jump Boxes are available at auto parts stores and some department stores that carry automotive products. Prices can range from $40 to $200 and maybe more depending on the quality and brand and how frequently you plan to use it.

Jumper Cables

First on the vehicle with a good battery, connect the positive cable to the positive post and then the negative cable to the negative post. Negative always last. Be sure

you are keeping the other ends of the cable separated. Don’t let them touch each other as they will have a charge and it could cause damage to you and maybe the car.

Next, on the bad battery connect the positive cable to the positive post first and then the negative to negative post last.

Start the car with the good battery first.

DO NOT START the car with the bad battery. Let the good car run for a few minutes, probably about five.

TURN OFF the car with the good battery. If you don’t you might damage the electrical system. Bad news.

THEN start the car with the bad battery. If the battery isn’t totally bad, it should start. Remove the negative cable first and then the positive cable last.

Then remove the negative cable first and then the positive cable last from the good battery.

Your car should be started. IF it doesn’t start you may need a new battery.

Jump Start Manually

If you have a manual transmission you can try “popping the clutch” to start your car or vehicle. This really works best if you are on a little bit of an incline or a small hill. You will need help with this as you will need someone to push the car while you are in the driver’s seat. First put the car in neutral, have someone push and as soon as the car is moving about 5 miles per hour, push in the clutch and put the car in first gear and lift off the clutch really quick. You need to do all of this fairly quickly. As soon as the car starts (it may be lurching and jerking) give it some gas so that it doesn’t die. It should start drive smoothly. Hopefully the battery will be able to recharge before you need to stop again.

Keep jumper cables in your vehicle just in case your battery needs to be charged.

Jury Duty

There may be an occasion when you will receive, by mail, a summons for jury duty or sometimes referred to as jury service for a court in your area.

DO NOT just ignore this or throw the summons away!

The summons will give you complete instructions on what to do, when and how and where. Follow these instructions.

If for some reason you cannot serve on jury duty you must follow the instructions on the summons to request being excused. Don’t think you are excused just because you asked. You need a written response from the courts excusing you.

The summons will also tell you that you must attend as directed or comply in a satisfactory manner and that failure to obey the summons may be punishable by a fine and even imprisonment.
