![]() When you meet
someone new and don’t know anything about them because
you haven’t gone to school with them, they don’t work with you or hang
out with your group of friends or they haven’t lived down the street
from you for years: it is a good idea to meet them in a public
place not at your home. Even if you work together and have been in
school together this is sometimes still a good idea.
You don’t need to tell anyone where you live or work or give out your home number until you get to know the person you are meeting better. All of this information is traceable. If you are Computer Dating by all means follow the suggestions listed here. You do not know the person you are meeting. It could be anyone! Everything they told you could be completely true and it could all be a lie. You must be cautious and protect yourself. When meeting at a restaurant simply give them your first name, when you get to the restaurant give your first name to the host/Hostess and tell them you are expecting a friend (and give their first name) who will be asking for you, please show them where you are seated. The person you are meeting can do the same; after all, they may not be so sure about you either. You could be the “bad guy”. Meeting someone you barely know (or don’t know if you met on the Internet) in a public place is much safer for numerous reasons. You should also strongly consider having friends with you.
![]() When
you use a
debit card, also called an ATM card, funds are directly
with- drawn from your bank account. If it has a credit card logo on it
then you can also use it as a credit card although the funds still come
directly out of your bank account.
The advantage of using the debit card as a credit card is that you can avoid ATM charges if you are using your card at a place or business that isn’t part of your bank’s network. Also, when out of state and using your debit card, always use it as a credit card to avoid excessive charges. Don’t forget to note your ATM or Credit Card Deductions from your checking account in your checkbook so that you will not be overdrawn on your account. ![]() If you are
interested in dehydrating foods there are dehydrators
available at discount department stores. You can also try
dehydrating some foods in your oven. This works well when making
crackers or cookies that you
want to be especially
crispy and dry.
Bake your cookies or crackers and turn the oven off, leaving the baked goods in the oven until the oven is completely cool as well as what you have baked. You can also leave them in the oven overnight. Remove and store in plastic bag that can be resealed. Thinly sliced fruit can be placed on a cookie sheet and placed in the oven at 200° for two hours. After two hours turn the fruit over and put back in the oven. Check every hour until the fruit is dehydrated enough to suit your preference. Make Your Own Jerky In the Oven:
Mix the first seven ingredients well in a large bowl. Add the beef strips. The beef should be completely covered by the mixture. If not add water, a small amount at a time until the meat is covered. Gently toss the meat in the mixture so that the water is mixed well with the first seven ingredients. Cover and let stand 7 to 8 hours in the refrigerator. Occasionally turn the meat gently still keeping it covered with the mixture. While the meat in marinating in the refrigerator, cover the rungs of the oven rack with strips of foil and place a sheet of foil in the bottom of the oven to catch possible drips. After the 7 or 8 hours, place several layers of paper towel on a plate or on a clean counter. Remove the meat and drain on the paper towel. Hang the strips of meat over the foil on the oven rack. Set the oven temperature at 200 ° . After one hour crack open the oven door so moisture can escape. Keep the oven door cracked and leave the meat in the oven for another 7 to 9 hours. At 7 hours taste test to see if it is ready. If not continue the process but don’t leave the meat in more than 10 hours altogether. ![]() Went
renting an
apartment, house, vehicle, moving van or any other item
in most cases you will be asked for a security deposit. These are
usually refundable unless you have caused damages to the rental
property. ASK if the deposits are refundable and under what
circumstances they would not be.
The deposits may not be refundable under any circumstance and that should be clarified from the beginning and before any paper work is signed. There may be several different deposits required when you rent an apartment or a house and one may be refundable when all requirements are fulfilled and one may not be because of policy. Pet deposits are usually not refundable or at 100% refundable. These policies should be explained before you sign a lease agreement so be sure to ASK questions. Security deposits may be required for utilities and these are refunded at a time in the future. It maybe when the utility is disconnected and the final bill is paid or it could be after a year of all payments being on time. ASK. ![]() If
you don’t
already have a dictionary it is a good idea to invest in
one. You can find good ones at your local book store and if your budget
is limited then look for one at a used book store if one is in your
area or at thrift stores.
When in doubt on spelling then search the dictionary and try to always use spell check on your computer system. How do you look up a word if you don’t know how to spell it? First sound the word out and try to determine how it is spelled using the vowels. For example: The word feral. The first time you look it up you may look for “farrel”. When you don’t find it that way … there’s no such word … then you might try “ferral” and of course there’s no such word but you do find feral and by the definition which is: existing in a wild or untamed state; you know it is the correct word. You may already know how to spell a word but need the proper definition so using a dictionary will help you in that case as well. You can also look up words online by putting the word dictionary into Search. ![]() ![]() ![]() Preparing for
a
potential disaster is not something any of us give much
thought to. Not every warning of
potential hazards such as thunder storms,
hurricanes, tornadoes or snow actually affects our well being and this
could be why many of us are lackadaisical about being prepared.
For all potential disasters we should have an emergency plan of action. Talk with everyone in your home and family members outside your home to develop a Family Plan of action. Set up meeting places both outside the home as well as inside. Everyone should have a task or responsibility in the event of an emergency. Choose a family member or friend that lives out of state. Arrange with them that in the event of a disaster emergency, and you and your immediate family are separated for a time, that you all will contact them to pass messages back and forth. This maybe be necessary if you can call out of state but not to your immediate calling area. Earthquake: There
is
little or
no warning for an earthquake. When one begins, the
safest thing to either get in a doorway or under a sturdy table. The
theory on this is that the door frame or the structure of the table
will help protect you from debris falling on you if the quake is strong. If you choose to run outside, quickly move away from the building and windows to avoid falling glass and debris. Avoid trees and power poles that can topple and pull down power lines as well. When you live in earthquake prone areas you need to know if: If in an
earthquake prone area your community probably issues manuals
on safety precautions that can be taken to insure minimal injury and
damages to property as well as recommendations for emergency survival
kits.
There are many things you can do such as putting baby locks on all cabinet doors to help keep things from falling out during a quake. Bookcases and china cabinets and other tall pieces of furniture can be secured to wall studs. Water heaters should also be strapped to wall studs for added security. The manuals available in your community will give you more detailed information on what you can do. Hurricane: Luckily
with
hurricanes there is the opportunity to have warnings many
days before the storm arrives. The danger is to not listen to the
warnings and think that you can “batten down the hatches” so to speak
and ride one out. If warnings are issued with the recommendation
to evacuate … evacuate … it may be a hassle but no one wants to deal
with the possibility of needing to look for your body because you
didn’t heed warnings. It is always better to be safe than sorry
regardless of the hassle and inconvenience. To minimize possible damages caused by high winds and debris you may need to board up windows and store garbage cans and lawn furniture in the garage. If there is no need to evacuate but there is a possibility you will be without electricity, water or gas then you will need to stock up on food, water, candles and a generator. Snow: Say the “S” word in
the South and most
everyone heads for the grocery
store to stock up on bread, milk, canned milk, snacks and food in
general. This is probably because a good snow storm is a rarity. Many
years ago state, county and city road departments did not have the
equipment to prepare for snow or to handle it once it arrived. Today
times have changed and many southern cities do have equipment to treat
the roads with an anti-icing brine or salt and sand before the snow
arrives and plows to disperse it once it does.Even though snow is rare in the South, most Southerners know what to do with snow … they make snow cream. In fact there is one ice cream manufacturer in the South that distributes a special flavor called Snow Cream. Seriously, snow can be a real hazard. If you are not accustomed to driving in snow the safest strategy is to stay off the roads. It will be very considerate of you to remove any snow from the top of your vehicle because while driving it could be blown off and into another vehicle windshield and it could cause an accident because the other driver may not be able to see. If this should happen to you and heavy snow is blown into your windshield, turn your windshield wipers on high and pull over as soon as it is safely possible to clean your windshield. When roads are icy and to avoid losing control of your vehicle when the wheels seem to begin spinning or possibly fishtailing take your foot off the gas and instead of braking, steer slowly in the direction you want to go. This should pull the vehicle out of a spin. Braking can cause it to go into a deeper spin and possibly cause an accident. At home, put salt for melting ice and snow on porches and side walks and the drive way. If possible have a snow blower that will help clear the driveway and sidewalks if necessary. Someone in the neighborhood may offer a winter service to do this for you. If this is not the case and a snow blower is not available you will probably need to shovel the snow. If the snow is very heavy you will need to get it off your roof to avoid the possibility of collapse. There are also some people who provide this service and those who will plow drives as well. In your Vehicle: If you live
in an
area where there is the possibility of heavy snow and
you will need to be out in it because you are at work when it starts or
what ever the reason, have an emergency kit in your vehicle. The kit
should include a snow shovel, a can of deicer, an ice scraper, water,
food, a cell phone charger, a blanket, flares, sand
for weight and in case you need traction, chains and if possible a
change of clothes and an extra pair of gloves.Thunder Storm: Thunderstorms
can
be very dangerous. If outside, do not stand under a
tree. It can be struck by lightning. If caught out in the open
and lightning occurs crouch down as low as possible. Height attracts
lightning. As quickly as possible, get inside a building and stay away
from windows. Most authorities advise to stay inside 30 minutes after a storm stops because random lightening can still occur and that as soon as you hear thunder you should go inside even if it is not raining and you do not see the lightening. You could still be in jeopardy of being struck by lightening by staying outside. It is also advised to turn off and unplug appliances; do not take a shower or bath or run water in the sink. Lightning can travel through pipes and water attracts lightning. Do not use the telephone land line. Tornado: When
circumstances
are conducive to the possibility of a tornado the
National Weather Bureau issues a tornado watch and as the situation
progresses warnings are issued. These can be just minutes before a
tornado actually touches down. In some cases there is no warning at
all. To be safe, when watches are issued be prepared that you may need
to take shelter.Do seek shelter as soon as a warning is issued. If possible take shelter in the basement, storm shelter or storm pit. If not, go to a closet or bathroom closest to center of the house or apartment and on the bottom floor. The smaller the room or closet the better because the wall studs may give you added protection. In a bathroom, get into the bathtub and pull a mattress over you if possible. You can also take cover in a hallway and use a mattress for protection. If living in an apartment on the second floor or higher, go to the hallway on the lowest floor of the building. If outside and suddenly you are confronted with a tornado bearing down on you get into a ditch and get as low to the ground as you can. If in a vehicle, pull off the road, stop safely, and get into the nearest ditch and as low as possible. If in a mobile home it is safer to be outside in a ditch or in a storm shelter or storm pit if those are available. Emergency Kits at Home: In case of a
major
emergency caused by a natural disaster or other
reasons we should be prepared to be able to survive for at least 72
hours (three days minimum) without help from the outside.
We may be in a situation where we can’t turn on a light, turn on the heat, turn on water, flush a toilet, or go grocery shopping. it may be days before utilities can be turned back on or we can even get first aid or any assistance from outside rescue teams. It is hard to imagine that any of us could be in a situation that would call for needing a survival kit. We need to be prepared. In Home Survival Kits: Begin
with a
large, clean, covered storage container or large covered
trash can.
This will be your storage unit for your disaster survival kit. Remember, you will need to store enough food to last at least 72 hours for each person in your household. Also store 1 gallon of water per person per day for 72 hours or longer if possible. Based on the number of people in your household, you may need more than one storage container. Place the items for your survival kit that can be ruined by water in sealable plastic bags to protect them from moisture which could be caused by heavy rain or broken water pipes. Place the heaviest items such as canned goods, water, cooking utensils, a camp stove and other heavy items on the bottom of the storage container. In the middle of the container put medium weight items. At the top, place lighter weight items and those things you may need right away for first aid. Store the container(s) in a cool, covered area that will hopefully be easy to get to barring a building collapsing. This could be a garage if you have one or a closet. What We Need: The following
items are recommended for Survival Kits if at all
possible. Remember you may not have refrigeration so don’t include
foods that will spoil quickly if not consumed right away. Always check
expiration dates. Foods and Water should be rotated out … used and
replaced. You don’t want to find yourself in a disaster situation with
supplies that aren’t usable because of expiration dates. Hopefully this
will only be a precaution and your kit will never be needed.

socks, shoes, flashlight, blanket and water in the storage area of your
vehicle, just in case.
When you need to evacuate: Most
of us are
never ready for an emergency evacuation. It is
even difficult to think about the prospect of ever needing to do that.
Unforeseen things can happen and there will be little time to gather
the things we should have in case the need arises.
If the situation is so urgent that you must evacuate immediately then do so and forget about material things that may be lost as they can be replaced, but you can’t be. If possible have important documents in one safe place that is easily accessible. These include birth certificates, social security cards, bank and credit card account numbers, the credit cards and any other papers you may need. If you keep them locked in a fire safe all you will need to do is grab that and run. If you have time, grab your survival kit and your photo album. If you have pets, get them into your vehicle as well and GO. The pets shouldn’t be left to fend for themselves. However if your pet has gotten loose and you can not find it, you can not jeopardize your life or anyone else’s by taking too much precious time to find it. Call The American Red Cross or Emergency Services in your area to get more information on preparing for disasters in your area. in different situations Dressing for Success: Getting
tattoos,
pierced or dying your hair unusual colors, wearing
oversized gaudy jewelry, dressing sloppily or all in black with black
lip stick or in baggy pants around your derrière, caps turned
sideways or backwards and etcetera is fine for
hanging with friends or at home.
You have right to look and dress as you please. No question about that. But, do it with family and friends when you won’t set yourself up to be judged by your appearance when it will be detrimental to your future. You may be reading this and saying this is stupid and you’ll do what you want. That’s Okay. Your choice, it won’t affect anyone but you. However presentation or the “package” is important. It can affect whether or not you get that great job you have your heart set on. This is not a case for discrimination as any future employer has a right to have a dress code. This may not seem fair but one of the first lessons to learn when on your on is that sometimes life just isn’t “fair”. Being presentable doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. As income increases you can invest in more expensive attire. When you dress and present yourself as a successful individual others will perceive you as being successful or on the road to success. This is one of those times when first impressions are important. Fair or not others do make judgments of us and our abilities based on how we dress and present ourselves. Give yourself a break and dress in the manner you know will be more acceptable. It doesn’t matter what the reality of your situation is. As said above, your presentation or “the package” is important. (see Appropriate Attire/Appearance) |
