Computer Safety

Computer Dating:

If you are into computer dating don’t give out any personal information to anyone that can lead to identity theft. You really don’t know who you are talking to, whether it is a real person or whether it is really a male or really a female.

You think you could be talking to a woman and it could be a guy.

Or you think it is a guy and it’s actually a woman. They sent you a picture? So what.  Anybody can send a picture of anyone to you, claiming it is their picture. It could be a 60 year old guy sending a picture of a 23 year old guy, or a 60 year old woman sending a picture of a 23 year woman or even a guy.  You just don’t know!

There are also computer programs that are actually operated entirely by computers that monitor chat rooms and then mimic the questions and answers that someone would really say to get info from you.

You don’t need to tell where you live or work or give out your home number until you get to know the person you are meeting. All of this information gives a stranger a way to find you. Give them a phone number they can get your full name and address. Give them an address and they can get your phone number and full name.

If you decide to meet in reality an individual you have “met” on line, always do it in a public place and preferably with friends. You have no clue who you are meeting and it is always best to be cautious.

It can be a dangerous world out there, so be careful!

(see Dating Safety)

Computers in General:

A few words of advice ….

Don’t put Personal Info online without security!

PLEASE, do not put any personal information on any site on the computer WITHOUT a firewall and anti-virus and anti-spy-ware.  It is just asking for MAJOR TROUBLE with your identity and your computer system. You can get these as a package or individually.  Even then you must be cautious.

Anti-Virus Software:

This is protection against viruses from getting into your computer system.

It scans your system and gets rid of viruses it finds, scans incoming as well as out going emails and either deletes dangerous emails or moves them to a secure file, warning that they contain a virus and should be deleted.

Anti-Spy ware:

This protects against software being loaded into your system that can send information out to some unknown source regarding your activity on line.

Firewall:

Firewalls prevent someone from connecting to your system without your knowledge and protects against dangerous software (that may have gotten into your system) from making a connection with a hacker outside your system.

Cookies and History:

To delete cookies and the history of the web sites you visited, go to Tools on your Browser.  Click on Tools and at the bottom of that list will be

Internet Options click on Internet Options. You can then follow the prompts to delete cookies and the history accumulated regarding sites you have visited.

Email:

It seems most everyone wants to forward emails that contain cute pictures, jokes and so on. It is probably safest not to open them although many of us do, but never click on a link in an email and then give out any personal information. You have no idea whom you are actually giving it to. Don’t consider it safe even when a friend sends it to you.

Yes, it is really difficult  to ignore something a friend has sent. Without question, however, if a stranger sends you an email do not open and do not click on any link in the email! It is hard not to be curious especially when the subject line seems friendly. Taking a chance is not worth it.

Take a few more precautions to protect yourself and your system:

You should not share your email address in chat rooms or on forums

Set up several email addresses

… one for business

… one for family and friends

… one for chat rooms

Be cautious with forwarding chain emails. This can put your email address at risk as well as your friends’ and family’s addresses.

Never store your password or a pin number in your computer. It leaves it vulnerable to hackers. When a window pops up and asks you if you want to save your password or pin click NO.

Instant Messaging:

Believe it or not Instant Messaging can also be targeted by hackers and they can send viruses and dangerous software to your system through it.

To be safe, turn off the file transfer feature and do not click on any link sent through instant messaging just like you should not click on links in your email unless you know for sure where it came from.

Phishing:

Phishing is something done by hackers trying to get your personal information and that can involve your financial information. One way of doing this is to send you a bogus email that appears to be legitimate. It may even have a logo that resembles the logo of a business, internet provider, your bank, your insurance company or anyone else you have done business with. BUT, be careful. This is a way of getting your personal information. The email may say they need to up date your records and include a link for you to click on. DO NOT CLICK!  Legitimate companies will not ask for your personal information in an email unless you are expecting the email.

The safest thing for you to do is to close your email and contact whom ever the email was supposedly from either by the email address you have from them in your records or by calling them on the phone if you have a number. Verify that they have actually contacted you via email. Most likely they have not. Also, if you go to their website directly from your browser it will be much more secure.

Pharming:

When you type in an address on your browser and end up on another site this is a Pharming scam. Sometimes it could even be a pornography site.

This is why using addresses that start out https// (...the s is the indication it’s secure ...) is important. The “s” should always be part of a financial web site.  Any site you give out personal information on should be secure!

There are unusual people out there who get their jollies by sending out viruses and worms just to ruin other systems. That is why there are all the alerts and virus updates almost every day for security systems.

Protect your computer. Protect your personal information. But do not accept a free anti-virus download that was sent to you through an email or pop-up. If you didn’t specifically go to the site and ask for it yourself, you don’t want it. In this day and age this cannot be stressed enough.

Hackers also try to get in your system and use it to send out spam as soon   as you turn it on. This subject is often commented on by experts in the know.

Believe it or not a hacker will try to get into your system and use your address to send out spam to hundreds of others. When this happens your internet provider can shut your system down completely until it is straightened out that the emails did not actually come your computer...this is a headache that you don’t need and can prevent by having adequate security on your computer system.

Pop-Up ads and Windows:

If your browser offers a Pop-up Blocker, use it. By using the blocker and not clicking on a Pop-Up ad or window if one should happen to get through, you are avoiding possibly downloading dangerous software that can create havoc with your computer system.

Sometimes windows will pop-up that look authentic and are about protecting your system. Close them … do not open or click yes.

If in doubt call your technical support for your computer.

Cooking Measurements

There are hundreds and hundreds of cook books that you will find at your local book store or at the library. You can find recipes for everything from apples to zucchini in almost every ethic cuisine you can think of. You can also fine recipes online.

To follow the recipe directions you need to have the measuring implements required for measuring the amount of each ingredient the recipe calls for.

The Basics:

  •    Measuring Cup
  •    Measuring Glass
  •    Measuring Spoons
  •    Ruler

Measuring Cups:

You can purchase one measuring cup that will be marked to show one cup, ¾ cup, 2/3 cup ,  ½ cup, 1/3 cup  ¼ cup. There are also larger measuring cups for 2 cups, and four cups. For a beginner, you can get away with using one measuring cup and if the recipe calls for two cups measure out the ingredient twice, three cups measured three times and so on.

You can also purchase a set of four cups either plastic or stainless steel and these are in graduated sizes with one size equaling one cup, one equaling one half cup, one equaling one third cup and one equaling one fourth cup.

If the recipe calls for 2/3 cup of what ever then you would measure out 1/3 cup of what ever twice when using these graduated sizes of measuring cups.

In case your recipe should call for metric measurements these are usually on most measuring cups that can be purchased in the United States.

American recipes do not call for metric measurements. But, you never know when you may need them! What if you find a fabulous recipe that calls for metric measurements? You have nothing to worry about!

Measuring Glass:

This is a very handy little measuring device that you can use for measuring multiple teaspoons, tablespoons, ounces and milliliters (metric). You can measure at one time up to 24 teaspoons, or 8 tablespoons, or 4 ounces or 120 milliliters.

Measuring Spoons:

Measuring spoons come in sets of four and are either plastic or stainless steel. Each set has one tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, ½ teaspoon and ¼ teaspoon.  The sizes are imprinted on the handle of each spoon. Usually the metric measure is also imprinted on the handle. If not, look for a set that does have the metric measurement.

You may have been lucky enough to inherit old family recipes and on occasion you may find a recipe in a cook book that is old and calls for the following measurements: dash, pinch and a smidgen. Believe it or not there are measuring spoons for these measurements!

There are shops that specialize in cooking utensils, measuring implements and all the other kitchen gadgets you may need. Sometimes these may be the only place you can find the things you want or need for your kitchen. However, many department stores and grocery stores with house ware sections have a good inventory of items you may be looking for or need.

Measurement Abbreviations:

c      = cup

tsp   = teaspoon

tbsp  = tablespoon

oz     = ounce

fl      = fluid

pt     = pint

qt     = quart

gal   = gallon

L      = liter

gr    = gram

lb    = pound

kg   = kilogram

Measurement Equivalents:

1 tablespoon (tbsp) = 3 teaspoons (tsp)

                                     =  1/16 cup (c)

2 tablespoons           =  1/8 cup

1/6 cup                      =  2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons

¼ cup                         =  4 tablespoons

1/3 cup                      =  5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon

3/8 cup                      =  6 tablespoons

½ cup                         =  8 tablespoons

2/3 cup                      =  10 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons

¾ cup                         =  12 tablespoons

1 cup                          =  48 teaspoons

1 cup                          =  16 tablespoons

1 cup                          =   8 fluid ounces (fl oz)

2 cups                        =   1 pint (pt)

2 pints                       =   1 quart (qt)

1 quart                      =   4 cups

4 quarts                    =   1 gallon

16 ounces (oz)        =   1 pound (lb)

1 milliliter (ml)        =  1 cubic centimeter (cc)

1 milliliter                 =   1/5 teaspoon*

5 milliliter                 =   1 teaspoon

15 milliliter               =   1 tablespoon

30 milliliter               =   1 fluid ounce

47 milliliter               =   1/5 cup

237 milliliter             =   1 cup

2 cups (1 pint)         =    473 milliliter

4 cups (1 quart)      =   .95 liter (L)

4 quarts (1gallon)   =   3.8 liters

When measuring, if a recipe calls for a Heaping Tablespoon, this is for dry ingredients and means the ingredient in the tablespoon is rounded and higher than the edge of the spoon’s bowl so the measurement is actually larger than a true and level tablespoon.

Level means the measurement is even with the edge of the implement being used to measure … a spoon or cup … it is level not heaping. To be sure it is level, use a knife to scrape across the edge of the spoon. The ingredient should fill the bowl of the spoon and be totally even across the width of the spoon.

* If you ever need to measure 1/5 teaspoon, unless you have a measurement equaling a milliliter it will be a guess on the measurement on your part. Use the ¼ teaspoon measuring spoon and remove about 1/5 of it. Depending on the recipe it may not matter if you actually use the full ¼ teaspoon. So don’t worry. The way to learn to cook is to experiment anyway.

Weight Measurements:

1 ounce                   = 28 grams (gr)

1 pound                  = 454 grams

1 gram                    = .035 ounce

100 grams              =  3.5 ounces

500 grams              = 1.10 pounds

1 kilogram              = 2.205 pounds or 32 ounces

Other Useful Measurements:

1 inch  (in)             = 2.54 centimeters (cm)

12 inches               = 1 foot (ft)

36 inches               = 3 feet (ft) or 1 yard (yd)

It isn’t likely or often that you may need to measure a yard when cooking.

However you will need to measure your pan that you are using and some times recipes call for a 9in x 13 inch pan. This means the pan would be nine inches wide and 13 inches long. If it calls for a 10 inch round this would mean the pan is round and measures ten inches across the center.

Cookware

Usually in the early stages of being on your own complete sets of cookware are something for the future. It isn’t uncommon to purchase a few pieces at a time.

Whether buying a complete set which would usually include several sauce pans of different sizes, at least one skillet and a Dutch oven, do read the instructions on care and proper cleaning. Sometimes even stainless steel requires special care. There are some that should not be placed in the dishwasher as the metal will become discolored.

If you should choose to use iron cookware, it must be seasoned and is accompanied with instructions as to how to do this.  It is discouraged from washing iron in soapy water as the soap can leach into the iron. If possible it should be wiped out after using. However, there are going to be times when it will need washing by hand and not in the dishwasher ever! Wash quickly with hot water and a few drops of dish liquid. Don’t allow the pan to sit in water at all. Dry immediately. Either place on a stove burner long enough for the pan to heat up and then turn off the burner and allow it to cool. This will help the pan to dry thoroughly. Put a few drops of vegetable oil in the pan and wipe so that the interior of the pan is covered with oil. You can also put the pan in a hot oven that has been turned off and after it has been treated with the oil. When you take care of your iron cookware, it can last a lifetime and even be passed down to future generations.

If you leave iron cookware in water it can rust and then you will need to throw it out.

Putting iron in a dishwasher can also cause it to rust. Over heating it can cause it to crack.

As you become accustomed to using recipes and experimenting with new dishes you will discovered there is a pan or pot for almost everything. There are tall steamers and short steamers, roasters, big skillets, medium sized and small. Saucepans and double-boilers along with pasta pans and casseroles are sometimes called for too. Just because all these pots and pans are available as well as the gadgets to cut, carve and serve with, it does not mean you must have every single one of them or that you can’t prepare a scrumptious meal or recipe without them.

Experiment and improvise with the cookware and utensils that you have now. When you are in the financial position to afford to fully furnish your kitchen with every pot and pan or gadget available … then do.

 (see Kitchen)

Couches (Sofas)

If you can afford to purchase a new couch or sofa, that’s terrific! But if not, great bargains on used couches or sofas can occasionally be found at used furniture stores or thrift stores. Some consignment stores carry furniture too, so when you have time, check out all these sources when you start to furnish your apartment or house.

If low on funds and you have limited space for guests use twin beds as couches … just the box springs, mattress without a frame.

Put the beds in a corner, one bed against one wall and the other against the other wall. One end of end bed should be against the other. Or find a table that can sit in the corner and bump the beds against it and use as an end table for both. If possible find a small, old wood breakfast table and cut the legs down so it will be the same height as the beds. Paint it to fit your choice in colors for the room. Use this for the corner end table. It will give you more table area for a lamp.. When this arrangement is set up, the beds and table will be in an ‘L’.

You will need four fitted twin mattress sheets in your choice of colors. Put fitted twin mattress sheets on the box springs and the mattresses. Use three or four or more bed pillows on the mattresses against the wall so they will be the “backs” of your news couches. You can also use them for pillows when sleeping. To cover the pillows … use pillowcases that match your sheets. To close the ends of the cases use Velcro or neatly stitch them closed so the threads aren’t prominently visible. Use your imagination and whatever suits your tastes, just consider using something easily removable and washable.

Couples

As a part of a couple.....you already know.... that it's not who you love, but HOW you love.  As hard as it may be during your everyday life to remember, you must at least try, and put into practice that you were whole before you got together.  Your partner is the enhancement to your life.  Not the reason.

Many underlying factors of your life and day to day activities such as work, school, stress....these can all play havoc on your own emotions as well as the ones you love.  So communication and compromise are key to making your relationship work and last.

Compromise does NOT mean giving in all the time or devaluing your own feelings and self worth...it means working together and finding a path that is fair for both of you.  Any relationship where you are always giving in to the other (and vice versa) is NOT a relationship.  Nor is it healthy.

Don't ever assume that your partner knows everything.  Meaning that if you're hurt and/or tired from stress, among other things, it's not going to be apparent to those around you.  Speak!  Don't get angry or worse because your love is unaware.  Don't give them the response of "If you loved me you would know!", or "I shouldn't have to tell you everything!"  YES, you do!

Chances are that they what they see is simply that you are not in a good mood and are struggling internally as to why,  and/or whether they are the cause.

You have to talk to each other.  And listen to each other.  And when arguments arise....Try to steer away from accusatory phrasing....such as:

       You NEVER.......this simply tells them that they always fail so why bother
           to try?

       You ALWAYS....such as, "You ALWAYS do that!"....this simply says, "I
           have no faith that you'll ever be different." And, "I've got this argument
           all planned out!"

Instead, try phrasing like.... "I hear that when I scream at you, it puts you on edge and hurts your feelings."   Okay, a little on the sappy side....but hey, I'm not in your argument.  You are.  Basically rephrase what you are hearing and ask for confirmation.  It tells them that you are listening and may help if what you 'hear' is not what they are trying to say.

And don't put words in each others mouths.  If you are in doubt, talk it out.

Make time for the little things with each other.
Leave 'love' notes everywhere or in places that will surprise them.  Such as in a notebook, briefcase, on a fogged mirror.....

So, if you are part of a couple … a two-some … remember, each of you is still an individual.  You will each have your own likes and dislikes … bad habits as well as good ones. You will each need to learn to compromise and work together for the good of the two.

If you are on a tight budget there are many things you can do together that are fun and low to no cost. From bike rides to picnics to walks in the park or on the beach if you live near one, there are many things you can enjoy.  Together.

Coupons

Manufacturers of food and many kinds of merchandise put out billions of dollars worth of redeemable discount coupons every year. These coupons have a value, it many be 10 cents and it may be dollars depending on what the product it. Last year manufacturers issued over $300 billion worth of coupons and only one per cent was redeemed by consumers.

Coupons for discounts on merchandise and food are available in magazines, newspapers, through direct mail and online. You can save money by using coupons for groceries, personal care items, dining out, oil changes, brakes, and many other items.  Some grocery stores have “double coupon days” and the store will double the value of the coupons. So, if you have a coupon worth 50 cents and you use it on the “double coupon day” your coupon is worth $1. Call your local grocery stores and find out which one offers a “double coupon day” and ask what day of the week it is and if it is every week or only once or twice a month and when.

Using coupons helps you stretch your budget. Many restaurants offer $5 off coupons generally with a minimum order or a half price special when two people are ordering. You buy one meal at full price and get the second meal at half price usually when the second meal is of equal or lesser value than the first. Use your coupons!

Credit

Definition:

According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition of credit in regards to business is:

'Trust in one’s integrity in money matters and one’s ability to meet payments when due; an arrangement for deferred payments of a loan  or purchase.'

It is important to establish a good credit record and this is done by making payments on time … when they are due. Establishing a good credit record can lead to financial independence. However, it is important not to over extend obligations.

Establishing Credit:

It is difficult to establish credit when young. One way of doing this is with utility companies. Even though deposits are usually required for new accounts these deposits are refundable after a period of time when a prompt payment record has been established. The refund may be a credit toward the utility bill itself or in a refund check which would be mailed.

The good thing about this is that once a prompt payment record is established future deposits may not be required, even when moving from state to state. Utility companies will also give you letters of recommendation when you move out of state and are going to a new utility company for services. You should also be able to use them for references when applying for credit. You will need to ask for them.

Paying rent when it is due and not being late will help establish credit and when you fill out an application for credit one of the items requested is your address and whether you rent or own.

Student Loans are another way to establish a credit history.  The important thing is to make payments when they are due.

Car loans are also a means of establishing credit. It is not recommended here that you go out and buy a new or used car if you are not able to pay your rent or other obligations, especially when public transportation is available in your area. Sometimes you can buy a used car and make the payments directly to the dealer who sold you the vehicle and not to a bank. Remember however, that the interest on this type of loan can be very high. However, if you choose this option, make the payments on time, get receipts and get a bill of sale and the car title when the vehicle is paid off.

Late Payments:

Sometimes you will have a late payment. Everyone does at some time or another. Either because it was simply forgotten and lost in the day to day shuffle or because funds are low and there’s no money.

Usually when late and even if you mail or personally make the payment as soon as you discover you have overlooked it, there will be a late charge on the next statement.

If you have not been consistently late and this is the first time, call your creditor; ask if it is possible to delete the late charge. Don’t be afraid to do this. The worse thing they can say is … no.

If you are in a bad situation, you have no money; you have been sick and out of work or you have lost your job and can not make your payments and are late or will be late, call and talk with some one in the credit department and ask if you can make arrangements to get back on track. Do not be demanding or rude or emotional. Be as calm as possible.

Explain your situation and if necessary repeat that you want to know what kind of arrangements you can make until you can get back on track.  If they say they can not help you or they have no authority to help you, ask for their supervisor. Again be calm. Do not let them intimidate you or frighten you.

DO NOT agree to make payments that you know in your heart will be impossible. This will only make matters worse.  If you can only pay a portion of the payment, that is better than nothing at all. But, remember, you are obligated for the payments and they want them.

When calling and talking with someone regarding payments or anything else of importance regarding your accounts always make notes. Write the date, time and the name of the person you spoke with. Ask that person if they have a badge number or an extension number in case you need to talk with them again. If making a payment by phone, ask for a confirmation number. You do want some way to reference the call in case there is a future problem. Don’t allow them to intimidate you. Don’t be rude. Be calm even if you are upset and angry.

Protect Yourself:

It is important to take steps to protect yourself and do what you can to protect your credit once you have begun to establish it.
When you make any type of payment: rent, student loan, utility, vehicle, or any payments that can reflect on your credit ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT!

Set up a filing system with a file on every account payments are made to.

File the receipt for each transaction in the appropriate file.  If renting from ABC Company set up a file under that name and put any paper work and receipts regarding them in the file. Do the same with the utility companies, student loans or a car payment and any one else you do business with, making a separate file for each.

It is important to keep track of these receipts in case someone says you did not make a payment. The receipt is your proof.

Your canceled check is also a form of receipt. Most banks do not return canceled checks anymore. Some banks will send a copy of the canceled checks with your bank statement. A copy of this, blocking out the other canceled checks on the page will be acceptable in most cases.

If the bank does not automatically send you a copy of your canceled checks you can call the bank and request a copy.  It would probably only be necessary to do this if you must provide a copy. There may be a bank charge for this service.
  • If you need to show or mail the receipt to prove you have made a payment, NEVER give back your original receipt. ALWAYS make a copy and give the copy. Keep the original receipt in the file. If you are mailing the receipt send it Certified Mail. This will cost a little extra but is worth it. (see Certified Mail) If you can deliver it in person, do that.
  • When you make your final payment on a loan ALWAYS request a letter stating that the loan has been paid in full. Put this letter in the file that is set up for that company.
  • Every six months or at least once per year check your credit records   with the credit bureaus to make sure the information is correct. If there is an error write the credit bureaus a letter explaining the error, if necessary send a copy of your receipts … copy only … not the original  and send the letter certified mail.
  •  (see Identity Theft)

Credit Cards (Prepaid):

Try to use a prepaid credit card when making purchases on line. This will be safer for you than a regular credit card. The funds are limited to the amount you can afford to put on the card. If by some chance the web site you are visiting is not secure your personal information or bank account won’t be compromised.  The most that will be lost is the amount of funds on the card. It is still strongly recommended that you only visit secure sites.

Curtains/Drapes

Bed sheets make great no-sew curtains or drapes.

Measure the width and height of your window. Write this down so you don’t forget. This will determine the length of the curtain rod needed and whether you need twin sheets or king size.  The curtain rod needs to be at least 4 to six inches longer than the window is wide.

Rods and Equipment:

Visit your area discount store’s home furnishings section to purchase a curtain rod, the brackets to hang it with and the ring clips to hang the curtain on the rod.

There are many styles in the market and since this will be a no-sew project choose a round rod in the style of your choice.  The rods should come with the brackets, rods, screws and instructions for installation. The ring clips should be larger than the diameter of the rod so that they slide easily back and forth. You won’t have to struggle to open and close the curtains.

You will need at least two brackets to hang it with. The brackets and the ring clip hooks may be less at the discount store so compare the prices for those at the home improvement or hardware store to those at the discount store.

If the rods should be more than what your budget can handle visit your local home improvement store or the hardware store. Price compare.

They may have less expensive ones. If not purchase a one inch diameter electrical pipe and have them cut it down to the length you need for a curtain rod. This should be about $5 or less.  Because the electrical pipe is so long, you may be able to get several rods when it is cut. So be sure to measure all the windows you will need rods for. Also if your window is very wide … like 10ft… you may have to have the rod cut in half just so it will fit into your car … no problem if you have a truck … but tie the rod down and hang a piece of cloth on end if its hanging over the edge of the truck bed for safety purposes so other drivers behind you will notice there is a pipe hanging out of your truck and won’t run into it. You would hate to have to pay for a windshield or scratch.

If you don’t have a truck, have the pipe cut in half and get a coupler. That way you can reconnect the pipe with the coupler. If you choose this option then have the pipe cut two inches longer than you originally wanted and that will accommodate the space the coupler will take up. This will be the center of your rod so it will not really make a difference in how your curtains will hang. You will need also an extra bracket to support the center of the rod…this bracket will actually hide the coupler. IF you are not sure how to attach the coupler, ASK the store clerk to show you.

What color do you want the rod and brackets to be?  If you decide to go with the electrical pipe (although it is prettier don’t go with the copper because it bends) it will need to be painted because it is gray metal. You can buy a can of spray paint (compare the prices at all the stores to find the less expensive) or you can buy plastic tubing in colors that is made to fit over a shower curtain rod. You will find these in the section of the home improvement store that sells shower curtains . These should be only a few dollars a piece, They are slit down one side and easily slip over the pipe. You can even get one for the shower curtain rod in your bathroom if you have a rod and don’t like the silver color.

The brackets should come with screws and instructions on how to install.

If the brackets do not come with either ask a store clerk what you need to install the brackets….Probably two screws for each bracket.

You will also need tools to put the screws in.

Are you living in an apartment? If so ask if the maintenance man can come to your apartment and install the rod. Tell them you want it done correctly and don’t want to damage the walls.  If you have the tools and feel confident enough to do it yourself…great!

Bed Sheets:

When you measure the width of your window, write down the width so you don’t forget.

If the window is 72 inches wide you need two sheets that are at least that wide. You will need a minimum of 24 ring-clip hooks. Purchase sheets in a color that goes with your color scheme…the color of your throw pillows, the sofa. After the rod has been installed you are ready to hang the curtains.

You may want to press them before hanging as they will be wrinkled from being in the package. If you don’t have an iron then try putting the sheets in the dryer with a wet wash cloth for about ten minutes. This may help remove the wrinkles or at least some. But as soon as you remove them from the dryer try to keep from wrinkling them any more and hang them right away.

The sheets will be hemmed at the top and bottom and along the sides. Most sheets have a hem that is wider on one end than the other. If this is true with the sheets that you have then this will be the top of the curtains and where you will attach the round clip hooks. Attach the hooks six inches apart. There needs to be a hook at each corner and if you have sheets that are 72 inches wide and you should have twelve hooks for each sheet. After attaching the hooks (there should be instructions in the package) to the first sheet then slip the rings over the end of the rod and hang. Or you can put the rings on the rod and put the rod in the brackets that will hold it and get a stool or chair to stand on and then attach the curtains. Do which ever way is most comfortable to you. After both sheets are hung then adjust the way they hang over the window so that it is attractive.

No Sew Curtains:

If using bed sheets for curtains isn’t something you want to do, but would like to make your own curtains with out sewing  then select fabric of your choice both in pattern colors and texture.

You will need fabric long enough to cover the window in length and then double the width.

Fabric comes in widths of 36 inches, 45 inches, 60 inches and wider. If your window is 40 inches wide and 70 inches long you will need  two pieces of fabric at least 45 inches wide and 72 inches long. So you will need 4 yards of fabric 45 inches wide.

You will also need 5 yards of self adhesive hemming tape, an iron and an ironing board.

You can find both the tape and the fabric in the same area of the crafts store, fabric store or department store. The edges of the fabric will be finished off … this is the salvage edge … and this will not need to be hemmed.  Cut the fabric in half so that you have two pieces that are 72 inches (2 yards) long. On each end fold a one inch hem and press toward the wrong side of the fabric. Put the hemming tape between the fold and the wrong side of the fabric and press again. Do this on both ends and on each piece.

To hang use ring clip hooks spaced about 5 inches apart.
